As we all experienced loss in these times, let our compassion speak for the unfortunate, who need more help than us, as we enrich the community around us with the gifts that God has given us.
2020 was a tough year. Pandemic and financial hardship hit hard. Most of us felt loss so hard we failed to look at what was happening in the streets. The homeless population who feeds in leftovers discarded in restaurants’ disposals was hit the hardest. Measures taken by authorities to try and control the spread of the disease demanded that food establishments only provide take-out food. This created an unexpected crisis in the fight against hunger. We do not count food in garbage as important to feed the population. Unfortunately, restaurants have very little to discard.
As we all experienced loss in these times, let our compassion speak for the unfortunate, who need more help than us, as we enrich the community around us with the gifts that God has given us. Have compassion and give to charities or directly to those in need.
Our group decides to walk around the streets of the Bronx to distribute hot food to the needy. We go from block to block with a container loaded with hot food, water, and cutlery. We never get rejected. Our food is always welcome. Preaching is necessary, but in the neighborhood where we are located more than ten groups of people preach on speakerphones and distribute flyers while those hungry people watch and listen. People cannot hear you when they do not feel like what you are saying pertain to them. When they do not feel the love emanating from you, they do not respond. How can we proclaim the Good News of the one who came to feed the hungry and leave them starving? How can we claim to not be judgmental, and yet blame them for their misfortune? Faith without works is vain. Help us do more.
